I totally endorse the comments made by Prof. Aubury Webb Snr. There has been about ten recessions since the great depression, and you want to tell me that none of the so-called great minds in Government, Private Sector, or Academia can figure out a way to stop a recession, or to formulate fiscal and monetary policies to curtail one. America burns, while a relatively small cadre of "fat cats" party and laugh their way to offshore banks.
What kind of governance can you expect from elected members of congress, when some of them do not even know who was America,s enemies in the second World War.
Every elected public official should get lessons in Ethics and good Corporate Governance.
The problem with America,s Financial and Political landscape is that it weilds dangerous webs of incest and conflict of interest. Unless these webs are de- entangled, more financial mayhem will continue to rear its ugly head, like a recurring decimal. America is under the microscope. This once great nation, the envy of the world, is now the laughing stock of the world. Travel outside its borders and you will understand what I mean.
We must bring back the American pride.

Wall street greed and the District of Corruption ignorance has forced me to rethink my investment strategy. We have started a home based business on a shoestring budget and are starting to acquire our own stock pile of real money, silver and gold.

In the movie "Wall Street", Gordon Grecko learned that greed was not so good. We have lost all faith in Wall Street and their paper assets. For many years now, in our home, there has been no faith or trust in politicians. Our suggestion, acquire some precious metals, if you can't afford them, do as we do, earn them!

Amen to Prof. Webb's comment. It is amazing to me that the human race has even survived all these years what with the insanely stupid things it does. And the debacle now in the US has got to be way up there on the list. The saddest and most disgusting part is that those who have been responsible are now being dragged down by those who have been so horribly irresponsible. And I am including politicians in Washington in the latter category- the stimulus bill most certainly qualifies as irresponsible since it will help the economy not one bit. Between the banking community and the politicians I don't know who is the worst. Greed and self-interest have taken over. God help us all!

Wall Street and Washington are "one and the same." The U.S. economy does not need a bail-out. The servant-Christian-leadership management-marketing-internaltional business decesion is simply: (1) Limit all congressmen and women to one term (no retirements..come backto main street an earn a living), (2) Remove the "Income tax on all working citizens "NOW" (the PERSONAL INCOME TAX SHOLUD HAVE BEEN RECINDED in August 1945 when World War II ended), Recinded all of the "De-regulation laws" that were passed the last 40 years by Congress; (3) Arrest the Wall Street Barons and Baroness' (have IRS seize their U.S. and Off shore personal bank accounts and place the funds back in the businesses and 401k plans they robbed. (4) Recind the 1980 Tax bill, (5) lower corporate and local businessmen and women' taxes. (6) Place the U.S. Dollar back on the gold standard., (7) Make it "Mandatory" all U.S. citizens will save 10% of the monthly salary/wages in CD and U.S. savings bods....cannot cash unless Crisis Emergency; otherwise barrow against their own Fund and pay temselves back. "WALL STEET" means nothing to the average U.S. citizen trying to earn a living and live day-by-day. All U.S. elected official should be required to go to a History BOOT Camp and study Global History of the world from the beginning to today.....As a DBA research scholar and doctoral candidate in management, marketing, and international business (Retired 40+ years military reserves and 22 years in corporate management). I can not belief the Global Economic Depression occurred and the U.S. "Leadership" had all the information to avoid this economic depression and they did "NOTHING." They all should ressign in "SHAME."

You said, "But an interesting shift has subsequently taken place: Americans began to view the federal government as a kind of “savior of the last resort,” and became thankful for the efforts the lawmakers were making."
Have you been smoking crack or what? The "shift" that has taken place has been one of turning cynical against this stupid spending bill. As evidenced by a Fox News Dynamics poll, 42% now doubt (as of last Friday) the spending bill (I'll be damned if I give it credence of calling it a "stimulus" bill) will even help the economy, down from 52%. So it's a majority of Americans who disagree with you. You might want to substantiate dopey statements like the one above because the American people will never view the gooberment as some kind of "savior." Please...

Secretary Paulson was exceptionally efficient in his devisal and implementation of the initial Bailout. His unmatched fervency for pushing it through just in the nick of time -- and with no strings attached -- before he is due to hand the Treasury over to the new administration, was for all to see.

Co-incidentally, this Bailout was passed just in time to meet the due bonus disbursements his 'elite' banker-buddies were entitled to...

Care to play Connect-the-Dots?

"Is Washington Replacing Wall Street as the City That Drives America?"

I'd have to agree!
