U.S. President Barack Obama often makes a point of talking about how important our country's middle class is to our economic growth - something he reiterated yesterday (Monday) in his second inauguration speech.
"Our country cannot succeed when a shrinking few do very well and a growing many barely make it," President Obama said. "We believe that America's prosperity must rest upon the broad shoulders of a rising middle class."
But the financial reality that currently faces the U.S. middle class is not one that can support a country's economic future.
For example, many middle-class workers have lost jobs or taken a pay cut since the president took office in 2009, and the 7.8% unemployment rate is the same as when President Obama first took office.
The labor force participation rate - the percentage of working-age people who are employed or actively seeking jobs - is at its lowest level in over 30 years, and those who are working are making a lower median income than they did 10 years ago.
At the same time, almost half of Americans are unprepared for financial emergencies. About 49% of Americans don't have enough money saved to cover three months of expenses and 28%don't have any money saved, according to a survey by consumer financial services firm Bankrate.com.
Here are five startling charts that outline a middle class decline that's taken shape under President Obama.
Middle Class Decline Under President Obama
Economy Offers Fewer Middle-Wage Jobs: Of the more than six million jobs lost during the recession, measured as Q1 2008-Q1 2010, the majority of jobs lost were middle-wage jobs.
In the recovery, Q1 2010- Q1 2012, the majority of jobs gained were low-paying ones. Low-wage jobs, paying between $7.69 and $13.83 an hour, made up 21% of recession job losses, but 58% of jobs added in the recovery.
Middle-wage jobs, paying between $13.84 and $21.13, comprised 60% of recession job losses, but only 22% of jobs added in recovery. Higher-wage jobs, paying $21.14 to $54.55, accounted for 19% of recession job losses and 20% of jobs gained in the recovery. The chart below shows the growth rate in each category since 2001.

Household Income Declines: As of November 2012, median U.S. household income was $51,310. That's $3,850 lower than when President Obama took office in January 2009, according to an analysis of census data by economic consulting firm Sentier Research. This chart shows median household income is not only lower than it was four years ago, but lower than when President Bill Clinton left office in 2001.

Young and Middle-Age Workers Earn Less: Not only has household income decreased, but it has fallen the most among younger and middle-age workers. Median wages for men between 25 and 64 dropped 19% from 1971 to 2011, to $34,000 a year, according to Massachusetts Institute of Technology professor Michael Greenstone. This prevents them from saving enough now for their retirement, setting up a U.S. retirement crisis. Here's a breakdown:

Food Stamp Use at All-Time High: The number of Americans on food stamps is at an all-time high. That number has increased over 50% in the past four years, going from 31.6 million Americans in December 2008 to 47.7 million as of September 2012.

Gas prices have almost doubled: Gas prices have climbed from the national average of $1.78 a gallon in January 2009 to the current average of $3.33. Several times the average price of gas has neared $4 during President Obama's first term.

THE PREPERS AND THE NON-PREPERS
Its so cool that you laid out the facts so clearly, heck, if you can understand a chart (graphic) and read a comic book, then you probably "got it". Still, so many voters act and sound clueless, even still. How can that be? Well, to begin with they are selfish, self absorbed, and decadent. If that does not describe the mental state of a great many voters, then try "STUPID". Either way, its no complement. Have the American voters already drunk the Kool-Aid ?
A growing minority of people are freaking out as the word "collapse" becomes more and more plausable with each additional $ Trillion added to the national debt. Celebrity news personality Glenn Beck is seeking to establish a $ 2 billion dollar libertarian community down somewhere it Texas. ( Why not Chile or Costa Rica instead ??). When things start to really unravel, the farther away from U.S. cities the better. Like Athens, Greece it won't be a picnic.
THE COSTS OF COLLECTIVE FOLLY
Oops, almost forgot. According to the History Channel, German voters thought Adolph Hitler was a "man of peace" in 1934. (That's how he was marketed). Adolph reinstated the military draft for all able-bodied German males between 18 and 60 in 1935, in violation of the Versailles Treaty. However, most German voters paid little attention to what Adolph was really all about as his popularity grew. In the end, the Germans paid a terrible price for their collective folly. Will it be different this time in America?? We hope so but the odds are very long indeed.
I AGREE WITH WHAT YOU SAID, IT LOOKS TO ME HE WANTS TO BE LOOKED UPON AS SOME KIND OF SAVIOR INSTEAD . HE SHOULD REMEMBER HE SAID HE WAS GOING TO SLASH THE BUDGET INSTEAD HE THINKS BIGGER GOV IS THE WAY TO GO, WELL HOW IS WORKING? I THINK ITS TIME PEOPLE STOPPED KISSING HIS ASS, SOMEONE STAND AND TELL HIM NO.WHAT ARE THEY AFREAD OF?
So Bush and Wall Street kill the economy and you blame the poor metrics on the next guy to hold the office. How absorb! The next thing you'll say is that tax cuts create jobs through trickle-down economics.
It appears you will go to your grave blaming Bush.
it appears that george bush left this gov in shambles, with the assist from a stupid congress.great job obama
Mike, please enlighten us with your knowledge of history and economics. So far you are such a Kool-Aid drinker for the current administration that we can't really gleen any useful information from your obvious partisan comments. President Bush has been gone for over 5 years now, your president caused this mess and you still support him. How sweet, thanks for your vote for turning our once great land into a socialist nightmare.
george bush was a idiot,he should be in jail, channey grumsfeld and take dumb mccain with them, and crack head rush limbaugh
Ben, a wonderful article full of hard facts – except, well, except you couldn't help sneaking-in at least 1 journalistic piece of hype, after all, you ARE a journalist, aren't you?
"Gas prices have almost doubled: Gas prices have climbed from the national average of $1.78 a gallon in January 2009 to the current average of $3.33. Several times the average price of gas has neared $4 during President Obama's first term."
My, my, this is embarrassing — hasn't anyone told you that energy prices are set GLOBALLY, and have nothing to do with who is, or isn't, a president of what country?
But hey, you will attract a lot of sympathy with this, most American citizen actually believe that.
"congratulations" – being sarcastic. How low can you stoop…..
Was it Churchill, who quipped "damn government, my cigar is not burning right again…" to satirise the blinkered attitudes of populace?
Fred, thanks for the response. You’re absolutely right that energy prices are set in the global market. I wasn’t trying to argue that Obama dictates the price of gas, but just showing another obstacle the middle class has dealt with the past four years.
The current status and anticipated path of the middle class is alarming, but not unexpected. Search for anacyclosis. The broad strokes of human history have already been traced by a human nature which does not change. The rise and fall of a middle class is a great dividing line in history. While the causes of momentous events in history cannot always be foretold, their consequences can often be foreseen. At this point in time, there is probably nothing we should fear more than the consequences which flow from the decline of the middle class. Those consequences can clearly be foreseen.
Stop complaining, Obama did not create this mess. Obama has nothing to do with US jobs going away. A previous government before he entered this realm took American Jobs away. Ask yourselves Why? A previous government took America's Hope away. Whether you see it or not Obama is trying to correct that factor. He wants to bring our jobs back, He wants to bring our children home, He wants to fix our economy. But he is being fought all the way. He's being threaten every step of the way. How can he fix your dreams of a better America when he has stumbling blocks; blocking him in every thing he's trying to do. Wake up America, smell the coffee; you like coffee! stop criticizing; and help him help you. That's the only way He/America will succeed.
TELL HIM TO STOP SPENDING OUR MONEY, HE WANTS A OPEN CREDIT CARD AND FOR WHAT? THE HACK IS WORSE THAN A TEENAGER WITH DADS VISA CARD. WAIT MAYBE HE HAS ANOTHER COMPANY OR TWO THAT HE WANTS TO THROW MONEY AT BEFORE THEY FOLD SO THE C.E.OS CAN BE SET FOR LIFE AND THE HELL WITH THE PEOPLE THAT COUNT ON THERE PAYCHECKS TO LIVE ON.
Look! The wetlands in Louisiana are shrinking now! It must be Obama's fault! Typical of those who forget history and the REAL CAUSES of some events. Like the rampant de-regulationism starting under Reagan and continuing up until Obama that allowed basically immoral (and often criminal, but without being punished) organizations to become rich by hoarding all of the improvements in worker / middle class productivity for their own aggrandizement, and piled ill-gotten gains on top of that with government corporate welfare (see bank bailouts for just one) that represented a real and substantial "redistribution of wealth".
What happens when you are overdrawn on your credit card? Do you stop spending and pay it off as you can afford it or do you call the credit card company and ask for a higher limit on it? It seems that this scenero is what is taking shape in Washington. The whitehouse has overspent itself (for various reasons) and now are badgering the house and congress to allow it to keep on spending with no credit limit. Folks some day, some how, some one must pay for all of this and guess who is lerft holding the bag? If the graphs are even half true here, this economical mess was started way back in the 80's and continued to the present day and looks like into the future. The path is as such ( first credit card companys, then banks and lending instutions and finally countrys) are forced to forclose on unpaid payments. Nuff Said
this countries debt is a result of the failures of the busch administration,2 un-paid wars
donut-hole, and a congress that is full of idiots, john alcoholic bainoher, kkk member bitch mcconnel, and gay boy paul ryan, folled by the top idiot mr previs
Will give you some credit on those comments. But, don't be so foolish as to not recognize the complete destruction of our economy that the current POTUS has set upon America.
Bush tried over and over again to get Congress to pay attention to what was happening with Fannie and Freddie. Congress ignored him. Democrats pushed to make homes available to their voters to the detriment of our economy. So, did Bush tank the economy or did Congress. Check out your facts. Of course, if all you listen to is the mainstream press, you're the fool. Paul Ryan's budget was right on target and would have dealt with our issues. Why hasn't the Obama administration come up with a budget?
OLD CLICHES AND NEW GOOBERS
Mike is an apparent illiterate. As you know, there is, in fact, no such thing in economics as "trickle down economics" (Dr. Walter Williams). It is strictly a partisan cliche, and a worn out one at that (from the 1980's). True enough, the "era of Big Government is back", as President Obama alluded to in his innaugural address on MLK Day. MIke, lets see if you are better off in four years with Big(ger) BRO. Ha, Ha, Ha.
I noticed before your article that a lot of the negative looking charts actually were headed down hill before President Obama's first day in office. I had seen other charts that take us back to RR 's voodoo economics. Bush the first had to go back on a campaign pledge and raise taxes. Bush the 2nd tried his own brand of voodoo economics and ran us downhill again. I am not saying President Obama's performance has been stellar and you can say all I am doing is blaming Bush, but the facts are out there.
President Obama took the reins of a runaway wagon on a downhill run. Perhaps it was his fault for winning the election. Perhaps the other party put up weak opponents, so they would not have to take the heat. I only know that casting stones and wanting to find somebody to blame is not going to solve a thing.
The economy and our future has nothing to do with gun control and everything to do with the economy.
As I read these comments, it seems pretty clear that we have a clear and accurate sampling of the American population. Everything from it all fell apart the day Obama took office to it's all Bush's fault. Sounds like Congress…
So who should we flog first? Bush for getting us in this mess or Obama for making it worse?
When we get that decided, perhaps we can move on to dealing with real issues… just take the zeros out of it and make it into a real household scenario. You owe the bank $ 160,000 and you make $ 22,000. How long do you think your bank would let you keep borrowing $ 16,000 more every year? Especially when you lied on your loan application about other obligations you had to the tune of $ 70,000.
…but Obama took the drowning USA-ship from Bush… lets not blame him yet… next 4 years will show if he can really do something.
Finn, I couldn't agree more. I am so sick of the propaganda about blaming Obama for things that got started under Bush.
How is it that you don't hear a word out of Bush? Because he knows he stunk up the place and is keeping quiet. He couldn't wait to dump this mess onto Obama when he left office.
How stupid do the Republicans think the people are? We have memories far longer than 4 years! Ben Gersten, YOU are one of those! If you have a problem with anything I just wrote then feel free to e-mail me and I'll be glad to straighten you out.
As Obama throws millions and billions of OUR money at failed businesses you Libs continue to blame Bush instead of the Congress that didn't act when they could have. I will support what Bush did to keep us safe from terrorism after 9/11. Frankly, what I see of Obama's approach is kind of Chicken S**t.
He can't seem to decide who his allies are and wants to apologize to the world for what we are. He's incompetent to lead this country. His ideology gets in the way as he keeps campaigning his way through another 4 years. His SOTU speech was total campaign rhetoric.
HES SINKING THE BOAT
I lay total blame on Obama for my situation and reason I am on food stamps. He helped DESTROY my industry when he, H$U$, PETA and the rest of the bunny huggers voted to close the equine processing plants. The horses are now in MUCH more danger of abuse, neglect and starvation. Yes, they are starving! Dought and wild fires have taken most of the pasture and hay and they no longer have any value (thanks to the above mentioned). Things with no value get thrown in the trash.
We all know about the "Evil Democrats" and their evil design to destroy capitalism and liberty! Why is it
that Republicans have sat silently by and allowed it to happen? Here's how & why.
The Republican Party often attacks and blames Democrats for supporting unions that have contributed to the economic mess we are now experiencing, but true conservatives know better. Republicans are every bit as guilty as Democrats for supporting union expansion into government. For example, The Teamsters broke with traditional support for Democratic nominees and the AFL-CIO when Nixon accepted the Teamster's offer from imprisoned union president James "Jimmy" Hoffa to use their infrastructure and chain of command to organize his reelection campaign. As well as deploy their muscle aka; union thugs and striker teams, to put down antiwar protesters. They even roughed-up Abbie Hoffman at Nixon's request.
Hoffa had been convicted of jury tampering, attempted bribery and fraud in 1964, and began serving his 13 years sentence in 1967. He wanted a Presidential pardon and release from prison. However, Nixon enjoyed the working relationship that developed with Frank Edward Fitsimmons, who Hoffa had appointed, acting president of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters from 1967 to 1971. So Nixon blocked Hoffa from union activities until 1980 as part of the pardon agreement, and Fitsimmons became the Teamsters' president from 1971 to 1981.
Nixon and Fitsimmons soon discovered that they both could expand their power and control by using both their offices to influence changes that would benefit each other. Fitsimmons got to expand union membership and dues collections into new areas like law enforcement and other critical government positions that were considered too sensitive to allow union activities that could compromise the public's interests and the people's trust in government. While Nixon could exorcise more command and control over the departments and agencies under expanding union control. Thus he could avoid publicly requesting the National Guard to put down protesters every time a problem arose and circumvent the US constitution.
Nixon then began expanding the various Departments of Law Enforcement turned over to union control. In a special message to Congress, On July 14, 1969 President Nixon identified drug abuse as "a serious national threat." Citing a dramatic jump in drug-related juvenile arrests and street crime between 1960 and 1967, Nixon called for a national anti-drug policy at the state and federal level before officially declaring a
"War on Drugs" in June 1971. Then he created the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) to coordinate the efforts of all other agencies in July 1973.
The working relationship that the Teamsters Union and the Republican Party had didn't end with Nixon's
subsequent impeachment from office. In 1980, Ronald Reagan forged a close political relationship with Jackie Presser. Presser would later become president of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters from 1983 until his death in 1988. He was closely connected to organized crime, and became president of the Teamsters based on the approval and support of the Cleveland Mafia.
During Reagan's 1980 campaign for president, Presser served as one of Reagan's hosts at a private luncheon for Teamsters and other union leaders and escorted Reagan to private meetings with Teamster officials. Reagan was highly regarded by union leaders because he had served as union president of the Screen Actors Guild from 1947-1952 and 1959-1960. He also served as a key negotiator through eventful years that were marked by labor-management disputes, such as the Taft-Hartley Act, House Committee on Un-American Activities (HUAC) hearings and the Hollywood blacklist era.
The Teamsters endorsement of Reagan in 1980, created such a furor within the American labor movement that when the second Reagan endorsement came in 1984, Vice President George H. W. Bush accepted the endorsement in person. The Teamster endorsement was the only large labor union endorsement Reagan received. In gratitude, Reagan named Presser to the second Reagan transition team as a labor advisor.
The media soon reported that Presser was reputed to have links to organized crime and financial malfeasance. Reagan and his advisors claimed to have been unaware of the accusations, and Presser denied having any ties to organized crime. New Jersey State Police witnesses testified that Presser was the primary contact for the DeCavalcante crime family of New Jersey and the Patriarca crime family of Boston whenever crime figures needed loans from Teamster pension funds.
When PATCO, the tiny union of federal air traffic controllers with only about 25,000 members that also endorsed Reagan in 1980, went on strike in the summer of 1981, violating a federal law prohibiting government unions from striking. Reagan used the opportunity to give himself the appearance of being tough on unions, declaring the situation an emergency as described in the 1947 Taft Hartley Act. He said that if the air traffic controllers "do not report for work within 48 hours, they have forfeited their jobs and will be terminated." They did not return and on August 5, Reagan fired all 11,345 air traffic controllers who had ignored his order, and used supervisors and military controllers to handle the nation's commercial air traffic until new controllers could be hired and trained. And guess what, as these new hires were subsequently absorbed into the union, PATCO was soon at full strength again!
Reagan and Presser didn't let the PATCO affair stop them from expanding union control, infact they both knew it was all just a means to an end. On 27 October 1986, Reagan signed a drug enforcement bill that budgeted $1.7 billion to fund the War on Drugs and specified a mandatory minimum penalty for drug offenses. By so doing, he expanded law enforcement and correctional departments and their corresponding unions exponentially. It also expanded the Department of Justice (DOJ) and added another 200,000 workers to federal payrolls. Making it just another great financial burden for Americans. The Teamsters anticipating the new law had already positioned themselves so they would benefit the most among all public sector unions when it passed.
The amount spent to fund the "War on drugs now exceeds $40 billion annually and still continues to grow, thus the ground work had already been layed when the 911 attacks occurred on Sept. 11, 2001. The process was completed when the Homeland Security Act, Border Security Act, and both Patriot Acts had passed through both Republican controlled houses of congress and were signed into law by Republican President George W. Bush which transformed the US into an American police state.
Therefore, it's already too late, you fell for it folks; both parties, Democrats and Republicans, tricked you into funding the very government agencies that would one day enslave you, "government police unions." We can no longer claim liberty or freedom. The only thing left for them to do is take our guns away! Once they've accomplished that, it is just a matter of time till we transform into the fascist dictatorship they envision for us!
They will not take our guns away all at once but, neighborhood by neighborhood, street by street, one city or county at a time, until all the guns are gone. Nixon deinstitutionalized mental patients and since then the "nuts" have been shooting up the place. Now the government has come up with the solution to fix the problem that, "once again they themselves created." How convenient it is for them, to take our right to own fire arms away, than it is to "lock up" or "terminate" the violent and/or insane offenders.
the longer this hack is in office the worse the country will get.its time the gop grew a set and put him in his place——–out the door
Ken, your Keynesian economic education is draped all over this one. You can blame Democrats and their economic policies for the situation, but blaming Obama is just intellectually dishonest. The way macroeconomics work, the only way for anyone to bring such a precipitous turn of events is to blockade ports and factories. Obviously, that's not what happened. The camel's back was already broken before Obama came into the picture, so one couldn't even say that something he did provided the last straw. This is very good example of trying to use stats and graphics to to lie.
The truth is that the economic policies of decades past finally came to a head in 2007 and the dominoes were still falling through 2008 while Obama was still campaigning for office.
Obama is still continuing the same bad policies, but what's the alternative in this political environment? Romney or any other Republican would have continued the same failing Keynesian principles with some cosmetic and rhetorical differences. The results would be the same, just like they have been under both Republican and Democratic administrations of the past. I suspect that it might be worse under a Republican, because, in the name of supporting business, they would have privatized everything that's still has any value and left the rest of the citizens utterly dispossessed.
Booms and busts are inevitable in any fiat currency economy – no other scapegoats needed!
As a JOB CREATOR, started w/one store & 15 employees in '95, as of 4 years ago now have 8 stores & over 120 employees and I will be closing one store maybe two. I've been trying to sell 2 other stores for over 6 months at 20% below market value (which is a CASH flow determination).
I'm reducing my work force as much as I can and am trying to get out of employing people & being a business owner.
WHY? 80% of it because the American populace voted for Obama again. It tells me how very foolish the American People are and how blind to the facts of the Socialistic Agenda that has destroyed so many countries through history. We are destined to repeat and I won't be the last one out, I'm not as foolish as the average American.
How did your business do in 2008? Mine closed that year because nobody wanted my services any more. That was before Obama. The patient got sick before the treatment failed. Just think a little and be honest about it.
My business dropped a little in 2008, did good in 2009 – One of my best years – and started steadily declining in 2010. I didn't blame it on Obama – I blamed it on the ignorance of the American people and not seeing the facts or learning from history. NO one is listening to the job creators – the small businessman – and we're all going to pay for it.
