As more of the 2009 healthcare reform law becomes reality, Americans are learning the hard way that many of the biggest Obamacare promises were Obamacare lies.
In retailing, they call this sort of thing "bait-and-switch," and it's against the law.
In Washington, it's called "business as usual."
During his first campaign for the highest elected office in the land, and later as he sought to push the Affordable Care Act (ACA) through Congress, U.S. President Barack Obama made a lot of enticing promises.
Some of these claims were true - under Obamacare, people can't be refused coverage for pre-existing conditions, for example - but many were assurances to the average American that no matter what, healthcare reform was almost all positive with few or no negatives.
Now we know that most of those assurances were Obamacare lies.
The Biggest Obamacare Lies
Obamacare Lie #1: "If you like your healthcare plan, you'll be able to keep your healthcare plan. Period. No one will take it away. No matter what."
President Obama said this often. But for many Americans, that promise will be broken. This week, the Congressional Budget Office issued a report in which it estimated that by 2022, Obamacare will cause 7 million Americans to lose their employer-based health insurance. That's because many of the Obamacare benefits will make many plans more expensive, prompting employers to drop coverage. Ironically, this broken promise could affect millions of workers in unions, which campaigned hard to get President Obama elected.
Obamacare Lie #2: "Under my plan, no family making less than $250,000 a year will see any form of tax increase."
Here at Money Morning, we told you about numerous Obamacare taxes, hidden and not-so-hidden, that will hit the middle class. In addition to the notorious "mandate tax," middle-class Americans will get hit by taxes levied on businesses that will get passed through to consumers, particularly the 2.4% tax that covers any medical device that cost $100 or more. Other Obamacare taxes affecting the middle class include a 10% tax on tanning services and a doubled penalty on withdrawals made from Health Savings Accounts (HSAs) for non-medical purposes.
Obamacare Lie #3: "I will not sign a plan that adds one dime to our deficits - either now or in the future."
This week, the CBO again raised its estimate on what Obamacare will cost over the next decade, from $814 billion to $1.047 trillion. While President Obama has claimed the ACA will actually reduce deficits due to all the money raised from taxes, penalties and fees, critics say much of the "savings" result from accounting tricks and double-counting. And with Obamacare's estimated costs rising rapidly, it's more a question of when, not if, the law will begin contributing to the federal budget deficit.
Obamacare Lie #4: Obamacare will "cut the cost of a typical family's premium by up to $2,500 a year."
Sorry, the "Affordable Care Act" will in fact make healthcare insurance far less affordable. On Jan. 30 the IRS released new regulations regarding Obamacare - remember that the IRS is in charge of penalizing you should you fail to purchase the mandated insurance - that included cost estimates for the plans the government will offer. For a family of four, the cheapest plan - dubbed Bronze in Obamacare-speak - will cost $20,000 a year in 2016. That's an increase of more than $4,000 from the average of $15,745 such families paid in 2012.
Obamacare Lie #5: The new healthcare law will improve, not hurt, the quality of American healthcare.
We don't have proof of this yet, but given that more people (Obamacare provides coverage to millions of people who do not now have it) will be using the same amount of healthcare resources, it stands to reason that quality will decline. Here's what Dr. Adam Frederic Dorin said in a recent article in The Washington Times: "Most doctors will not be able to afford to see patients with an Obamacare card. This means that patients will be increasingly relegated to longer lines in publicly funded clinics.... More patients will be denied access to advanced, cutting-edge drugs like chemotherapeutics."
Obamacare Lie #6: It's not a government takeover: "I don't believe that government can or should run healthcare."
Although Obamacare doesn't seize total control of the U.S. healthcare system, it extends the tendrils of government deep into it and gives the Department of Health and Human Services broad powers. One particularly troubling example is the Independent Payment Advisory Board, which will have the power to lower payment rates for Medicare treatments, which could reduce the care available to seniors.
Obamacare Lie #7: The state health insurance exchanges will open on time.
One of the keys to fully implementing Obamacare is launching the so-called health insurance exchanges in each state, where people will be able to shop for health plans using tax credits. The CBO this week contradicted assurances from the Obama administration that the exchanges will be ready later this year. The CBO report said the exchanges are unlikely to open in October, as promised, because they won't have enough plan options, and people will be reluctant to use something untested and unfamiliar.

its a brave step, the healthcare program, but i keep asking myself "what is wrong with everyonne paying for their own healthcare"? Seems to me in the ennd it will bring health care down for us all.
It's a government grab, of power, and taxation,
all designed to make gov. our protector, big
brother and nominal sovereign.
With OB king. socialist that is.
im canadian, you americans are paying like crazie for healthcare,Obama is trying to reduce the cost to you;WHY CANT YOU SEE THAT?
Obamacare is going to cause huge increases in health insurance premiums, it will bring about a big decline in health services and will cause doctor shortages, and like the Canadian system there will be long waits for healthcare. Government never works better THAN FREE ENTERPRISE. funny isn't it that Canadians were coming across the border to get American healthcare but now that will stop and you will have to fly to Asia to get decent healthcare. Obama is dedicated to the destruction of this country, we already have impossible debt and with Obamacare and Alien amnesty we will be many trillions further in the hole!
We are not as blind or as stupid as you are…
I think it would be better that government takes control on health insurance.
It's getting ridiculous that the current system charges $600 for taking blood sample, and the cost of some maintenance medicines (lipitor) is twice as high as in other advanced countries, like UK.
We all know all the US doctors abuse the current system to the extreme.
So, please stop defending current system.
This was told before the horrible bill was out. Those stuck on MSNBC, CNN MSM and the Huffington post aren't getting the real news. They are outlets with a Liberal agenda.
One blow to healthcare that no one is talking about is the reduction in nursing staff caused by the mandates. Hospitals are firing part time nurses to avoid paying for their health insurance. This is leaving them understaffed. That leads to poor patient care and could end in disaster for a patient whose nurse is too busy to monitor their warning devices. And guess what. The NURSE will be blamed if anything goes wrong. She/he will, no doubt, lose her/his job and career, which will lead to further understaffing.
Thomas Linzey, an environmental lawyer from Pennsylvania, has said that the U.S. Constitution protects private property and commerce more than the rights of individuals, communities and the earth; this is true, as since Marbury vs. Madison (1808) which established the judicial intent of the Constitutional Convention (1787) that the judicial branch would, in fact, be the legal arbitrator of last resort, the U.S. Supreme Court has upheld these dual precepts of economy more than any other single pretext.
The "sanctity" of both private commerce and property codified in the Constitution was given no greater context than with the unanimous decision of the John Marshal Court in the celebrated Johnson vs. MacIntosh (1823) case. Here, the Court flatly claimed the extinguishment of Indian title – the "right" of property – by "right" of conquest, whether violent (i.e., the killing of people and seizure of their property) or not. The only difference, the Court said, between pre-1823 acts and post-1823 acts of extinguishment would be that such seizure(s) would now have to be "with due process;" no matter if such due process was accomplished without just compensation or through extra-legal (illegal) acts, as actually occurred, and continues to occur, today.
So it can be said with legal certainty that the property presumed as private and the "inherent rights" thereof as afforded in the Constitution are, in fact, bourne on the backs of blood and thievery and stealth and lie, as well as, in some instances, legitimate purchase.
Through a series of decisions beginning in 1819 and thereafter the Supreme Court has upheld the rights of corporations to act as individuals (corporate personhood), which of course, codifies the rights of private commerce OVER living individuals, let alone the communities we all live in, and of course, the planet earth we all live among and upon. Hence it is a misnomer and dishonest to say that "Obamacare" is the creation of a President and his political party because, despite disagreements, the details argued back and forth between the partisan parties represented the nuances of corporate power OVER government intrusion on that power, the government in this instance representing the entirety of the population of the United Stats through the payment of taxes.
Since that Government is, in effect, controlled by the corporate entities as have been defined since 1819 to today, in the 21st Century the corporate control of government is all-consuming, e.g., profit over all, which is amoral in character, since by codifying violent conquest into Federal law as was done in 1823 the extent of limitations of that policy were meant to be within the exterior boundaries of the United States, which meant that OUTSIDE those exterior boundaries, violent conquest to extinguish title of non-U.S. held-lands was, in the eyes of Constitutional law, still legal and justifiable.
Since corporate power (private commerce) and the pursuit of profit over all is the prevailing legal tenet of the Constitution, virtually all of the supposed "lies" in Obamacare were constructed by a fight between two partisan political parties representing the same interests, and therefore have no relevance to the real issue of the rights of human beings to have a health care infrastructure, including an emphasis and maintenance and prevention rather than refinements of technology and invention of artificial chemicals that are toxic rather than curative, that serves living persons rather than non-living corporations.
Beginning with the actual U.S. Military Budget of $1.2 Trillion dollars annually, the vast majority of these expenses, beginning with the Pentagon's consumption of fossil fuels (the world's largest single consumer of such fuels) are, in fact, government subsidies to corporations. "BIG" Government is due to the "guaranteed" (locked-in) shareholder profits provided to "BIG" corporations provided by both partisan parties through their votes on both legislation and appropriations.
Least the intent of this argument be lost on those who think that what is being said here is "liberal" or anti-capitalist or even Marxist (it is not), in an era of human-caused climate change that is irrefutable, local and regional entrepreneurship understood in the context of the finite limits to growth due to both population and a diminution of resources means that a 180 degree turn in perceptions and acceptance of these realities toward conservation and renewable are absolutely essential if our species is going to survive through the 21st Century and beyond. While the prevailing view of this and other similar websites are still "lost in the clouds of immediate gratifications and fantasies of technological colonialization" say, of the Moon and nearby planets, those days are over.
Investors who are savvy to local and regional opportunities and the collaboration with investors in other locales and regions to make a deliberate choice to work toward a resolution of these complexities of the modern age at the regional and local level and not listen to the voice of greed of globalization can still reap financial rewards knowing that if we collectively don't, we do so at our species' peril.
See, that's the problem with being a wingnut. You'll believe anything to keep your juvenile outrage going.
Here is a FACT: As demand increases, if supply remains level, prices go up. If demand increases and supply decreases, prices go up more. This is the law of supply and demand.
You can thank the GOP for most of the provisions which result in the right wing calling it 'Obamacare lies.'
They’re still lying about ObamaCare.
Name just ONE of the printed lies / delusions listed above that aren't true. You're obviously a liberal………refuse to handle the facts and get your spin from the likes of MSNBC, Huffington, NBC, et al. Wake up and smell coffee!

OBAMACARE enhances outsourcing. Enacted in July 2010, The U.S. healthcare reform (“ObamaCare” or the “Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act”) is intended to pressure large and small employers through force and taxation. The result will show companies deciding to send customer support, sales, lead generation and appointment setting jobs offshore or risk going out of business. U.S companies can take advantage of a dedicated bilingual employee who is 100% committed to their project. ESL nearshore employees in Costa Rica are just as or more effective than transitional in-house employees. In addition, giving the business the freedom to scale up their offshore staff without getting caught in the Obamacare challenge in 2014.
Wow…20k for a family of four. I live in Canada and myself and my partner pay 110.00 per month combined for our healthcare coverage. When i lived in Vancouver I worked at a government run liquor store and constantly had Americans coming in and complaining about the cost of the booze up here.$25.00-35.00 for a 26ounce,35-55 for 24 beer,10-12bucks for pack of smokes, higher prices on gas…etc…my answer was always yehhh but what do you pay for healthcare for a family of four…I can tell you this much, I cant imagine writing a check for 1500.00+plus for each month just for healthcare…theres no way most people could afford that up here and probably down there as well. There will be massive amounts of people down there not going to cooperate cause they cant afford it and a lot of people will dig themselves even futher into the underground economy. I dont get the prices down there…obviously our higher taxes on sin stuff helps us up here but our premiums are nearly 10x less…My Dad when alive was a surgeon…our family immigrated to Canada in '72 from England and I asked my Dad later in his life why he chose Canada and not the U.S. to move to and he said although he could have made MUCH more money as a surgeon in the U.S. he wasn't a fan of U.S. style governance. I dont know what the comparison between doctors here and there would be today but maybe thats still part of the problem. I think even families up here pay only a little more
MSP Premiums
In B.C., premiums are payable for MSP coverage and are based on family size and income.
From January 1, 2012, to December 31, 2012 monthly rates are $64.00 for one person, $116.00 for a family of two and $128.00 for a family of three or more. Effective January 1, 2013, monthly rates are $66.50 for one person, $120.50 for a family of two and $133.00 for a family of three or more
The cost of Medicine is not orders of magnitude different in other places, instead each country manages it's cost when in fact they are the suppliers of the medical benefits. But what does that mean? You don't get the care you want, you get the care the state wants to give you. So if you are a healthy person this is a great system, unfortunately the sick people are those that need care and in socialized medicine the get subpar care. I will use myself as an example in the Canadian Drugstore I would pay $160/month for my meds without insurance and there are two I can't get in Canada because they are not approved by the medical board (due to price) . How is it that i would have my healthcare for $66.50/month. I know how, I would not be prescribed the same meds, is that good?
