With the polls tightening, the first presidential debate on Monday, Sept. 26, could give investors a big indicator of the likely winner of the race -- and that could entail a big shift in stocks...

Just look at what happened to stocks after the first presidential debate of the 2012 election cycle between Mitt Romney and President Barack Obama. The VIX volatility index, a measure of fear and uncertainty in the markets, surged nearly 30% from Oct. 3 -- the day of the debate -- up until Election Day on Nov. 6. Over the same time period, the S&P 500 fell 0.79%.
