The 22 years I spent as a newspaper reporter were some of the best of my life - in large part because of the cool experiences I was able to enjoy.

During my days as a "cub" reporter with a tiny weekly in Havre de Grace, Maryland, I got to ride along with state and local police on evening patrols, to fly with state troopers as part of an aerial "speed trap," to accompany investigators on a drug raid - and to sit inside a cordoned-off perimeter during a nightlong citywide manhunt for a suspect who'd shot several police officers.
