Apple: Don't Hate the Player, Hate the Game

Apple Inc. (Nasdaq: AAPL) CEO Tim Cook was summoned to Congress last week to face outraged legislators over his company's failure to pay corporate income taxes to any national government on more than $74 billion in overseas earnings.

This is a perfect example of a situation that is simply the tip of the "offshoring" iceberg. Below, I'll address what it means for your money and why the outcome may not end up at the "obvious" solution.

Buy, Sell or Hold: Is United Parcel Service Delivering for Investors?

We all know United Parcel Service (NYSE: UPS) as the guys in the big brown trucks.

There's a reason why they are always in such a hurry: They handle over 16 million packages a day worldwide.

But what you might not know is their business model goes well beyond just being the world's largest package delivery company.

With service to over 220 countries, the Atlanta-based company also offers Supply Chain Solutions, including freight forwarding, fulfillment and returns.

So bringing a package to your door is just part of the story for "Big Brown" and its share price.

But before I tell you whether or not to buy this big name bellwether, let's take a look at what keeps the wheels spinning at UPS.

Online Shopping is the 'Driver'

Despite the ongoing saga with the struggling world economies, UPS has fared remarkably well, showing strength and resiliency rather than weakness.

Part of the reason is the robust growth of e-commerce in the U.S-which simply means more packages and higher sales.

In its most recent report, earnings per share for the first quarter were $1.04, up 4% year-over-year.  Domestic package revenues were $8.27 billion, growing 3.3% year-over-year while operating profit grew more than 9%. To the plus side, operating margin also expanded by 70 basis points.

Energy Investors Will Love These New MLPs

The "midstream" segment in oil and gas markets is undergoing some very interesting changes these days.

Remember, these are the companies that connect "upstream" (field production of oil and gas) and "downstream" (refining, processing, wholesale, and retail distribution) functions.

Throughput – moving and storing volume – is the major component of midstream activities, as well as the primary source of revenue. And lots of it.

This market is still the domain of master limited partnerships (MLPs) and other partnership arrangements and used to be primarily populated by pipeline companies.

But the sector is diversifying in an exciting way.

MLP "clones" are starting to emerge, controlling more expanded activities and new product-specific focuses that never existed before.

That means brand-new investing opportunities for you.

What to Do Now as the End of QE Nears

If investors needed a reminder that global stock market rallies have been goosed by the Fed's lose monetary measures, they got it.

On Wednesday, U.S. equities went on roller-coaster ride.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average, up 155 points before FOMC Chairman Ben Bernanke said the Fed could soon begin to tap the brakes, ended the day down 80.41, or off by 0.5%,.

The uncertainty of when the Fed would begin to wind down its $85 billion-a-month in asset purchases sent investors to the sidelines in a hurry.

"This is a very sensitive market and particularity sensitive to any notion that tapering will come too soon," Quincy Krosby, market strategist at Prudential Financial in New York told Reuters.

"No one wants to be selling if the data reaches the point when the Fed begins to specifically talk about tapering. The market doesn't wait for the Fed to move. It will move before. That's how it operates," Krosby continued.

Of course, we knew QE couldn't really last forever. So what should investors do?..

Why Ben Bernanke's Market Manipulation is So Brilliant

Nothing lasts forever, apparently not even quantitative easing.

On Wednesday, Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke threatened to take away the massive punch bowl that's been spiked with easy money juice.

There's no set timetable, but maybe there is. It's hard to interpret Fedspeak.

So maybe they'll start paring back their $85 billion a month buying spree, or maybe they'll jack it up, which is what Benny said only a few sessions ago.

What the heck is he doing? What are they doing? And who are "they" anyway?

Here's the deal…

One Sure Winner as We Fight Deflation

[Editor's Note: We are constantly surveying the investment world for ideas, hidden stories and unique perspectives to share with you. For the past six months or so, we've talked a lot about the velocity of money and its effects. Increasingly, it's become the most important factor in understanding the markets and the uncharted waters we're currently navigating.

For years we've been delicately sailing between the Scylla and Charybdis of our day, between inflation and deflation. And the sharp drop in gold was yet another slide towards deflation's shores.

Meanwhile, the world's central bankers have been at the helm, doing all they can to keep deflationary pressures at bay and steer hard toward inflation.

But despite their unprecedented global efforts, including massive money stimulus and near zero interest rates, the rocky shores of deflation loom larger and larger. Here's why…

Why Insiders Love these Stocks to Buy Now

One of the most powerful positive indicators of stocks to buy is insider buying by officers and directors of a publicly traded corporation.

There is often a good reason why an insider buys stock in the company he works for and it is the same reason you and I buy a stock: He or she thinks it is going to go higher in the months and years ahead.

The big difference is that insiders know more about the direction and finances of the company and are in a better position to make an informed decision. Both research and practice shows that following the insiders often leads to excess profits.

Following insiders when deciding on stocks to buy has been a reliable approach to selecting investments over the years.
