Stock Market Today Hits Biggest Weekly Gain of 2014

Stock market today, Feb. 14: U.S. stocks rose today, marking the biggest weekly gain this year amid a slew of better-than-expected corporate quarterly earnings and more optimism about the economy.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed up 0.79%, or 126 points, at 16,154 points; the S&P 500 closed up 0.50%, or 9 points, at 1,839; and the Nasdaq closed up 0.08%, or 3 points, at 4,244.

Energy futures were mixed today, with light, sweet crude oil for March delivery trading down 0.3% at $100.08 per barrel, heating oil for March delivery trading up 1.1% at $3.06 per gallon, and natural gas trading down 1.1% at $5.17 per million BTUs.

Metal futures were buoyant, with gold for April delivery trading up 1.4% at $1,318.40 per ounce, and silver was up about 5% at $21.42 per troy ounce.

"Star Wars" Series Keeps Netflix Inc. (Nasdaq: NFLX) Momentum Rolling

Netflix Inc. (Nasdaq: NFLX) announced yesterday (Thursday) that it has gained exclusive streaming rights to an animated "Star Wars" series from Walt Disney Co. (NYSE: DIS).

NFLX stock climbed 1.7% yesterday and reached a record high of $439.35. DIS stock is up 1.7% today.

The sixth season of the series "Star Wars: the Clone Wars" will be available to subscribers in the United States and Canada starting March 7. The first five seasons ran on Time Warner Inc.'s (NYSE: TWX) Cartoon Network.

Netflix also announced that it will have exclusive U.S. streaming rights to Disney movies starting in 2016.

Toyota Motor Corp. (NYSE: TM) Stock Down After Recall, How to Play It Now

Toyota Motor Corp. (NYSE: TM) stock fell more than 1% Thursday, following Wednesday's recall of every third-generation Prius the company has sold.

The recall covers 1.9 million vehicles worldwide, including 713,000 in North America. Reportedly, a programming glitch in the hybrid system prompted the recall. The malfunction could shut down the hybrid engine, forcing the vehicle to stop, even if it is being driven.

The Companies Spending the Most on 2014 Sochi Olympics - And What They Really Gain

Around 23.7 million people watched prime-time coverage of the 2014 Sochi Olympics Tuesday night when U.S. snowboarder Shaun White missed on a third-straight gold medal for the halfpipe event, a 17% jump in viewership from a comparable night of the 2010 Vancouver Olympics.

Those numbers are why advertisers compete for – and spend so much money on – attracting viewers' attention. 

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) generated an estimated $1 billion in sponsorship revenue in the four-year cycle ending with the 2012 London Olympics.

Olympic sponsors, who are organized into one of four categories – worldwide and tiers one, two, and three – are picking up most of the advertising tab. In London 2012, "top Olympic sponsors (TOP)" paid more than $100 million in cash and "value-in-kind" goods and services for the right to participate, with the next tier paying $40 million each.
