Today's Stock Market News and Earnings Calendar

Today's stock market news, February 6, 2014: U.S. stocks rebounded from intraday lows on Wednesday. The Dow Jones Industrial Average remained steady, finishing at 15,440, while the Nasdaq fell 0.5% to 4,011. The S&P 500 slipped 0.2% to 1,751.

U.S. stock futures were up Thursday prior to jobless claims data. According to the Challenger Job-Cut Report, the U.S. economy had 45,107 planned full-time job cuts in January, up 12% year-over-year. The heaviest cuts occurred in the retail sector, as consumers continue to shift toward online channels.

This Stock Market Sell-Off Will Bring a Great Opportunity to Buy

The stock market sell-off has made for a rough start to 2014 – and February could bring more of the same.

The S&P 500 Index fell by 3.56% in January, its worst monthly drop since May 2012, and was off to its worst start in February since 1933. The Dow Jones Industrial Average plunged more than 300 points on Monday, Feb. 3, and had its worst start since 1982. And the Nasdaq Composite Index started the month down 106 points, or 2.61%.

General Motors (NYSE: GM) Stock Shrugs Off Weak Earnings

After a strong 2013, General Motors Company (NYSE: GM) stock has slumped so far this year and could use an earnings beat when it announces results Thursday morning before the markets open.

Analyst expectations for General Motors earnings per share (EPS) have slipped from $0.90 three months ago to $0.87 now, which is partly responsible for the 13.5% slide in GM stock so far this year.

IPO Calendar 2014: This year is forecast to be a record year for initial public offerings (IPOs).

Over the January to March period, some 250 to 300 new issues will launch, according to professional services firm EY – a number not seen since the start of the 2008 financial crisis.

And biotech companies are the hottest issues to date.

Today's Earnings Prove That Twitter (NYSE: TWTR) Stock Is Overhyped and Overvalued

Twitter (NYSE: TWTR) stock is trading 158% higher than its $26 IPO price – but that bull run could be over after today's earnings.

After market close, TWTR will report its first-ever earnings as a publicly traded company. Wall Street forecasts Twitter will lose $0.02 per share on $217.8 million in sales in its Q4 2014 report. Full-year estimates call for an earnings per share (EPS) loss of $0.19 on revenue of $639.39 million.
