Dow Jones Today: Markets Slip on Jobless Rate, Ukrainian Tensions

Dow Jones Today: The markets slid on Friday despite the fact that the unemployment rate slipped to a five-year low.
The jobless rate fell to 6.3%, beating expectations of 6.6%. In April, the U.S. economy created 288,000 jobs, but the labor participation rate slipped to 62.8% from 63.2%.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 46.04 points to finish at 16,512.83. The S&P 500 slid 2.56 points to close at 1,881.12, while the Nasdaq was down 3.55 points to finish at 4,123.90.

Facebook (Nasdaq: FB) is one of many social media stocks that didn't begin well. After its initial public offering (IPO), FB stock failed to garner any real momentum for the first several months, and even dipped below $20 per share in late 2012. However, FB stock has since surged. It's up almost 60% since its IPO, and more than 10% this year alone. Investors have nabbed a 140% return over the last nine months.

Gold Price Today Has Best Close in a Month

The gold price rose over the key $1,300 level Friday as tensions in Ukraine once again neared a boiling point.

At Friday's close on the Comex, gold for June delivery settled at $1,302.90, up $19.50 for the day, its best close in a month. Spot gold, which traded as high as $1,306 in Friday's session, was last up or $16.70, or 1.3% to $1,302.60, putting the yellow metal on pace for its biggest gain since April 4.

AT&T Could Buy DirecTV – But the Deal Would Not Live Up to the Hype

The Wall Street Journal reported this week that AT&T Inc. (NYSE: T) could buy DirecTV (Nasdaq: DTV), which could create the second largest television provider in the United States.

DirecTV is the largest satellite TV distributor in the U.S. with more than 20 million subscribers. AT&T's landline television service u-Verse has approximately 5.7 million subscribers.
