Stock Market Futures Watching XOM and CVX Amid Falling Oil Prices

This morning (Tuesday), stock market futures suggest an open 26 points below Monday's close as oil prices continue to fall on a rising dollar and the announcement that Saudi Arabia will slash oil prices to the U.S.

Today is also midterm election day, meaning American voters will decide how Democrats or Republicans will share power in Congress over the next two years.

Here's what else you should know in stock market news today.

The Fed's Lost Grip on Interest Rates

As widely expected, the Fed finally ended its massive bond-purchasing program.

Now the market will turn its focus to interest rates.

Will the Fed raise rates next year? If so, what effects will that have?

The Fed is ultimately reactive, exerting little, if any, control in the long run. Low rates are here only as long as the Fed can manage them.

At that point, it is time to look out.

Here's what will cause us nightmares - and what we can do to avert a crisis in our investments...

Stock Market Futures Down Today on These Top Stories

Good morning! Stock market futures suggest an open below Friday's close after disappointing economic data emerged from the Eurozone and China. On Friday's session, both the Dow Jones and the S&P 500 hit record highs.

Today, watch for earnings from Herbalife Ltd. (NYSE: HLF) after the closing bell. The health company has been the center of a long public battle between activist investors Bill Ackman and Carl Icahn over its marketing model. In addition, keep an eye on the election polls.

Amazon's Odds Get Longer as "D-Day" Approaches

Part of our investment "thesis" with Alibaba Group is that the e-commerce giant has designs on markets besides China.

And we got a solid sign of that early last week.

Last Monday, at the Wall Street Journal's 2014 Global Technology Conference, Alibaba Chairman Jack Ma said he hoped his payments company, Alipay.com, could link up with Apple and its new mobile-payment system, Apple Pay.

"I'm very interested in that," Ma told journalists during an interview at the event. "A good marriage needs both sides working hard. I respect Apple and I respect [Apple CEO] Tim [Cook] very, very much – from the heart. I hope we can do something together."

Just a few minutes later, Cook – who was in the audience and interviewed up on stage right after Ma – said he would like to see Apple collaborate with Alipay.

This was more than just an exchange of pleasantries between two top tech CEOs.

It tells us that a deal will likely get done. And it would be an important deal for both companies.

Here's why...
