The best solar penny stock performer so far is BioSolar Inc., which is up 57.9% from $0.038 at the May 31 close to $0.06 today. Shares of BSRC surged 17.6% yesterday (June 7) alone after the company announced it would be developing lithium-ion battery solutions with British energy firm Top Battery Co. Ltd.
Despite U.S. President Donald Trump pulling the United States out of the Paris Climate Accord on June 1, solar energy stocks are starting to rebound. After falling 1% from June 1 to June 7, the MAC Global Solar Energy Index is up 1.9% today (Thursday, June 8). Smaller micro-cap companies are seeing the same momentum, with the above-listed 3Power Energy Group up 25% just today.
PSPW's huge 25% return in just one day shows how profitable penny stocks can be. Since they can cost as low as $0.01, they can offer explosive returns in an extremely short amount of time.
But we do not recommend investing in any of the top solar penny stocks listed above. These companies have already seen big returns, meaning they might not offer the same returns to investors who buy in now at the high price. Not to mention all of these firms trade on over-the-counter (OTC) exchanges, which means they're unregulated by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and could be fraudulent.
Here at Money Morning, we advise buying shares of solar companies that trade on regulated exchanges - like the NYSE and Nasdaq - and also boast strong financial health. This can be gleaned from researching a company's SEC filings to see if its profits are growing.

The pick is JinkoSolar Holding Co. Ltd. (NYSE: JKS), which develops solar-power panel projects around the world. The Chinese company boasts over 15,000 employees and provides solar-power access to the biggest energy-consuming nations in the world. These include the United States, Germany, and Mexico.
However, its biggest market over the long term will undoubtedly be China. As the most populous continent in the world, the government is quickly changing its methods of energy consumption in favor of cleaner solar energy.
According to Green Tech Media (GTM) Research, Chinese solar demand exceeded 34 gigawatts in 2016 and provided a huge boost to global demand, which reached 78 gigawatts last year. That was up 52.9% from 51 gigawatts in 2015. And China's demand is projected to grow at an annual rate of 5.3% over the next five years.
"With global operations and good relations with the Chinese government - where solar power capacity equivalent to more than 30 nuclear reactors was installed last year - Jinko is perfectly positioned to continue growing and rewarding shareholders savvy enough to spot that fact," Moors told Money Morning readers on June 8.
Analysts surveyed by FactSet have one-year price targets that range as high as $27 per share. That means investors who buy into JKS today at the current $18.13 price could see a profit as high as 48.9% by June 2018.
Additionally, the United States withdrawing from the Paris Climate Accord will help lift Chinese solar stocks like JKS. According to Moors, the U.S. withdrawal will inevitably lead to increased development and investment in Chinese solar technology. In turn, that will lead to big growth for companies operating in the country like JinkoSolar.
Its direct access to the burgeoning Chinese solar market will make JKS stock the best way to invest in global solar energy growth this year.
