Facebook Inc. (NYSE: FB) has over 2 billion active users - and it just revealed its strategy to get the next billion.
It's allowing children to use the site.
This spells huge growth for Facebook - and huge opportunity for investors.
"They already have one out of four men, women, and children on the globe on Facebook," Money Morning Technical Trading Strategist D.R. Barton, Jr., said on FOX Business Network's "Varney and Co." on Monday. "And now they're giving parents a reason to put their kids on to grow that number even further."
Just on Monday (Dec. 4), Facebook launched Messenger Kids, an app that lets children communicate with their friends online with stickers, filters, and drawing tools. Full of parental controls and created with the help of the National PTA, the app is marketed as a safe way for children to use social media.
On its website, Facebook promises "More fun for kids, more control for parents."
Indeed, despite Facebook's 13-and-up age restriction, many children are already on Facebook proper. By creating a separate, safe, ad-free environment, Facebook is encouraging parents to take an "if you can't beat 'em, join 'em" stance when it comes to their youngsters' social media presence.
Facebook's Making the Right Move
This is precisely the market Facebook wants to be targeting for its next leg up and continued dominance of online advertising for years to come.
Children between the ages of five and 12 number roughly a billion strong worldwide, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. That's over 13% of the global population.
And according to a Facebook-run study by research firm Dubit, 93% of U.S. children have access to a smartphone or tablet, reported Forbes.
"They are a juggernaut," D.R. said.
