Oklahoma Marijuana Legalization Is a Massive Boon for Cannabis Stocks

The Oklahoma marijuana legalization vote on June 26 seemed to surprise everyone. One of the reddest states in the nation voted "yes" on medical cannabis.

Oklahoma is now the 30th U.S. state to legalize marijuana, and it’s a sign the legalization trend isn’t slowing down anytime soon. Vote Yes on 788, a pro-marijuana group, estimates that legal medical cannabis sales in Oklahoma could reach as high as $30 million by the second year that the program is in operation.

Oklahoma's marijuana law allows physicians to recommend cannabis for any medical condition, if they believe it will benefit their patients. Other states that legalized medicinal cannabis restrict its use to diagnoses of a specific health condition, like cancer.

Plus, Oklahomans with a medical marijuana ID card will be allowed to possess as much as three ounces of marijuana in public and store as much as eight ounces of marijuana at home.

That a conservative state like Oklahoma would pass a broad medical marijuana measure like this one is a sign of legal cannabis’s momentum.

With Oklahoma opening this new door, there is also the opportunity for other companies to capitalize on a booming business. This includes cultivators, sellers, materials suppliers, and marijuana real estate companies.

The good news is that Oklahoma is just one of the states that is deciding on marijuana legalization this year, so you still have time to get in on the pot stock revolution...

Assuming you invested $10,000 in a high-return stock, your investment would’ve turned into $607,000.

Put another way, every $25,000 invested at this rate of return would transform into $1.5 million.

There is little doubt that the cannabis revolution is underway. Choosing the right pot stocks to invest in can be a challenge.

The first two stocks on our list are “pick and shovel” plays. Just like the entrepreneurs who actually got rich from the gold rush by selling picks and shovels instead of chasing elusive gold, these companies are doing the same thing with cannabis.

ScottsMiracle-Gro Co. (NYSE: SMG) is a well-known American provider of lawn-care products. It sells grass-seed products, fertilizers, and solutions for outdoor pest control. Recognizable brand names include Turf Builder, Ortho, and Miracle-Gro.

But several years ago, the company's CEO decided it was time to get involved in the legal marijuana market. Scotts first did this by selling fertilizer to cannabis cultivators. Now, SMG focuses on hydroponics, which is a method of growing plants in greenhouses without soil. It has acquired multiple hydroponics companies, with another purchase this year for $450 million.

SMG is trading at $81.33 with a high price target of $100 – that’s a potential 23% gain.

Microsoft Corp. (Nasdaq: MSFT) serves the legal cannabis market on the financial side.

The tech giant now owns and operates the world's second-largest cloud computing network with its Microsoft Azure product. It is leveraging this service with a partnership that serves the legal marijuana market.

Microsoft is aligned with KIND Financial, which delivers legal compliance services to cannabis-based companies.

Because there are so many different regulations related to legal marijuana, this can be a hardship for any company in this business. KIND provides seed-to-sale tracking for these businesses, which allows them to remain in legal compliance and keep products off of the black market.

MSFT shares are trading at $107.20, with a high price target of $130 for the stock.

And our last stock to watch is a serious heavyweight inside the legal cannabis market…

Cronos Group Inc. (Nasdaq: CRON) is a Canadian investment firm that focuses on medical cannabis businesses.

It owns Peace Naturals Project Inc. and Original BC Ltd., both companies that are licensed to sell medical cannabis in Canada.

Not only is it primed to profit from Canada’s recent, sweeping marijuana legalization going into effect in October, but because the company doesn’t directly sell marijuana, it can be listed on U.S. exchanges.

Having its stock listed on two exchanges makes it even more popular, which helps boost its share price. And as the United States moves toward friendlier laws for cannabis, CRON could have a leg up on its competition.

CRON is currently trading at $6.65.
