Markets Live Recap: Today’s Rally Will Be Short-Lived (So Here’s What to Buy Instead)

Every day the markets are open, our experts - Chris Johnson, Tom Gentile, D.R. Barton, Jr., and Shah Gilani - are live streaming what they're seeing in real time.

They're breaking down the latest news and giving our Members actionable steps to continue making money in assets most investors are missing today.

And if you join the stream live, you can get our experts' best trade ideas before the broader market catches on.

Here's what Chris, Tom, D.R., and Shah had to say on their live streams today, Monday, April 6...

Chris Johnson shows you how to trade the market today (9 a.m. ET)

  • Patience is key today. Chris' system is showing a short-term rally emerging thanks to headline news painting an improved picture of the global health emergency.
    • But investors should be careful. It could be another "bull trap."
  • Traders today should shift away from an ETF strategy and toward an individual stock-picking strategy.
    • Pay close attention to the upcoming earnings season. That will tell us which stocks are decoupling from their peers in their respective ETFs.
  • Later this week, Chris will reveal some of his "Best in Breed" individual stocks to trade based on news that develops over the course of the next few days.

Tom Gentile reveals what to watch this week (11 a.m. ET)

  • The first thing Tom looks at to start every Monday is the SPDR S&P 500 ETF (SPY).
    • Tom thinks that the positive news about the coronavirus coming out of New York could lead retail investors to get back into the market.
    • But he expects the "smart money" to sell that over-optimism because the reality of the situation is likely worse than the numbers being reported.
    • Tom thinks SPY could drop to $220 in the near term (-15% from its current $260 price) based on the short-term signals he's seeing in the options and bonds markets.
  • Here's what Tom said to watch the rest of the week:
    • The COVID-19 reports coming from Governor Andrew Cuomo in New York.
    • How long it takes for small businesses to receive stimulus checks from the government and the stipulations attached to the money received.
    • Q1 Earnings - "What Earnings?" - take a second look at all your positions and estimate how bad their Q1 earnings will be.
  • In his streams later this week, Tom will reveal two or three stocks that he thinks hold the highest probability of winning trades... So stay tuned and check in again tomorrow at 11 a.m. ET.

D.R. Barton, Jr., does not believe today's rally in stocks will continue (1:30 p.m. ET)

  • D.R. is hesitant of today's rally because gold and bonds are also moving higher along with stocks.
    • That signals that investors aren't fully buying into a continuation of the move, since they're committing capital to "safe haven" assets like gold and bonds.
  • With that in mind, here are D.R.'s two best trades of the day:
    • Buy the Direxion Daily Small Cap Bear ETF (TZA), which provides -3x leveraged exposure to the Russell 2000, for $60.
      • Since small-cap stocks tend to move quicker than large caps, D.R. thinks you could get a pop back to $70 on this ETF once selling resumes.
      • Put a stop loss order at $55 just in case the rally continues.
    • Buy the ProShares Ultra Bloomberg Crude Oil ETF (UCO), which provides +2x the daily return of an index of futures contracts of WTI crude, for $2.50.
      • If positive news comes out of Russia and Saudi Arabia on Thursday, that would quickly send shares of UCO higher.
      • R. thinks a potential move to $4 is possible, which would mean a 60% gain for the ETF.

Shah Gilani on the market close and the Dow resistance level to watch (3:45 p.m. ET)

  • Stocks raced into the close at highs for the day, with the Dow closing 7.7% higher at 22,680.
    • Shah said he wouldn't be surprised if momentum carried stocks higher tomorrow, but Shah is NOT chasing them at these levels.
  • 24,000 is the resistance level Shah is watching for the Dow.
    • If it hits that level this week, that's when Shah will begin shorting individual names.
    • He's currently putting together a list of stocks to short and will be revealing them later this week.
