Space Stocks Are Red Hot, but Is This IPO Worth Buying?[Stocks](https://moneymorning.com/category/article/stocks/) # Space Stocks Are Red Hot, but Is This IPO Worth Buying? by Rich Duprey December 29, 2025 Share it: The space industry surging with investor enthusiasm, fueled by anticipation of **SpaceX**'s [potential 2026 initial public offering](https://moneymorning.com/2025/12/12/rocket-lab-launches-higher-as-spacex-prepares-for-2026-ipo/). Whispers of Elon Musk's flagship space company going public have ignited fresh excitement across the sector, building on momentum already generated by strong performances from players like **Rocket Lab** ( [RKLB](https://moneymorning.com/stocks/rklb/)) and **Intuitive Machines** ( [LUNR](https://moneymorning.com/stocks/lunr/)). Rocket Lab has delivered reliable small-sat launches, while Intuitive Machines achieved historic lunar touchdowns, boosting confidence in commercial space ventures. This renewed buzz comes as private and public capital flows into orbital economies, lunar exploration, and defense-related technologies. Yet not every recent entrant has soared. **Firefly Aerospace** ( [FLY](https://moneymorning.com/stocks/fly)), which debuted via an IPO in August, has seen its shares tumble 48% from its offer price, underperforming the broader sector. With its mix of lunar ambitions and defense diversification, does FLY represent a buy-the-dip opportunity – or is it a stock to avoid at all costs? ## **What Is Firefly Aerospace?** Firefly Aerospace is an end-to-end space transportation company specializing in small-to-medium launch vehicles, lunar landers, and emerging defense capabilities. Its flagship Alpha rocket targets responsive launches for payloads up to 1 ton, while the Blue Ghost lunar lander has already achieved a flawless soft landing on the Moon in March – the first fully successful commercial lunar touchdown (Intuitive Machines had two landings that tipped over). Firefly secured multiple NASA awards under the Commercial Lunar Payload Services (CLPS) program, including a substantial $176.7 million contract to deliver payloads to the Moon's south pole in 2029, with plans for recurring annual missions. The company is expanding beyond pure space access through strategic moves like its $855 million acquisition of SciTec, adding expertise in space domain awareness and missile tracking, plus partnerships for hypersonic technologies. This defense sector diversification lets Firefly capitalize on greater national security spending. Moreover, with a market valuation around $3.7 billion, Firefly just earned inclusion in the **Russell 2000** and **Russell 3000** indexes, attracting passive fund inflows and greater visibility among institutional investors. ## **The Moon Is Getting Crowded** Despite promising contracts, Firefly operates in an increasingly competitive environment rife with technical, financial, and competitive challenges. Launch anomalies on its Alpha rocket have delayed manifests and introduced execution risks, while its heavy reliance on government contracts exposes its revenue to delays or cancellations. Cash burn is also elevated as the company scales up its ambitious programs. In the lunar segment, Firefly directly competes with Intuitive Machines, which also [builds and operates landers](https://moneymorning.com/2025/12/22/intuitive-machines-stock-heads-to-the-moon-time-to-hop-aboard/) under NASA's CLPS framework, with both vying for limited NASA task orders in a program capped at $2.6 billion through 2028. Rocket Lab currently owns the small payload market and its forthcoming Neutron rocket will open up the medium payload market (SpaceX dominates the large payload segment). ## **Bottom Line** There is a compelling argument for Firefly's long-term upside with its proven lunar success, defense growth, and a robust NASA-backed pipeline in a quickly exploding space economy. For risk-tolerant investors, the post-IPO plunge could present an attractive entry point, especially as its inclusion in indexes and mission milestones potentially accelerates its recovery. However, caution is needed: many IPOs struggle in their first year. Historical patterns show mixed longer-term results, with winners requiring patience as they find their footing. That means FLY isn't a buy today for most investors. I'd wait for an improved launch cadence and signs it has a roadmap for profitability before committing any money. **Beat the market, without relying on brokers or biased institutions.** Email(Required) Company This field is for validation purposes and should be left unchanged.
