Marvell Beat and Raised. After Hours Still Graded It Against Nvidia.
Marvell beat the quarter and raised the outlook. After hours, the stock still got punished for not being Nvidia.
Marvell Technology (MRVL) reported fiscal second-quarter revenue of about $2.74 billion, up 37% year over year and above the midpoint of prior guidance. Non-GAAP earnings landed near $0.94 a share. Data center sales climbed about $2.17 billion, up roughly 46%. That is a real AI infrastructure quarter.
For the third quarter, management guided revenue to about $3.15 billion, plus or minus 5%, with non-GAAP EPS near $1.10. Both sat ahead of where the Street had been camping. Then shares slipped around 6% after hours anyway.
The raise was not small
Marvell now sees fiscal 2027 revenue growing about 45% to roughly $12 billion, up from a prior view near $11.5 billion. Fiscal 2028 revenue was lifted toward about $18 billion. Data center growth expectations moved higher again. Custom XPU and XPU-attached products are expected to more than double into fiscal 2028 on the back of hyperscaler demand.
CEO Matt Murphy has been selling the networking and custom-silicon side of the AI factory, not the GPU crown. Optical interconnect, custom ASICs, and the plumbing that makes rack-scale AI work. When Nvidia guides a 70% growth year and jumps almost 9%, the rest of the AI chip stack gets graded on a curve it did not write.
Why the tape can hate a good number
Marvell already ran hard into the report. Expectations for optics and custom silicon were elevated. A clean beat that fails to blow the doors clean off can still sell when holders were priced for perfection. Gross margin mix and the gap versus Nvidia's gravitational pull both matter in that kind of tape.
I still think the interconnect story is one of the cleaner ways to own the AI buildout without needing every GPU cycle to be flawless. The after-hours fade does not delete a 37% growth quarter or an $18 billion fiscal 2028 map. It just reminds you this group trades emotions as hard as it trades silicon.
Bottom line: Marvell delivered growth and a higher multi-year map, and the after-hours drop says AI chip investors are still measuring everyone against Nvidia's bar first.
