AeroVironment's $1.5 Billion Funded Backlog Is the Real Headline
AeroVironment just showed you the order book Wall Street keeps begging defense names to prove.
Shares of AeroVironment (AVAV) climbed after fiscal first-quarter results that put a hard number on drone and counter-drone demand. Revenue hit a record about $480.5 million, up roughly 6% year over year. Funded backlog reached about $1.5 billion, up roughly 37% from a year earlier. Total backlog, funded plus unfunded, sat near $2.8 billion. Bookings landed around $683 to $700 million, a book-to-bill near 1.4 times.
Management reaffirmed fiscal 2027 revenue guidance of about $2.125 to $2.225 billion. Autonomous Systems did the heavy lifting at about $346 million, up roughly 21%. The smaller Space, Cyber, and Directed Energy slice still felt the hangover from program cuts and the earlier SCAR termination.
Why the backlog matters more than one quarter
Defense investing is a patience game until the Pentagon and allies actually fund the line. A $1.5 billion funded backlog is that proof in plain English. Recent awards include a LOCUST E-HEL package near $465 million moving toward full-rate production and a Titan IDIQ near $500 million with an initial order around $80 million.
Adjusted EBITDA was about $53.4 million. Non-GAAP EPS came in near $0.59. Costs are up as the company builds capacity. Roughly 70% of the year's earnings power is still expected in the back half. That is a timing story, not a demand story.
The American angle
I have watched this name swing with every headline about drones and directed energy for years. What I want is production that ships on schedule and backlog that converts into revenue without another round of hope. Uncrewed systems and counter-drone work are not science-fair slides anymore. They are line items in real defense budgets with allies and the Pentagon both writing checks.
Bears will keep asking about margin mix and second-half delivery risk, and that is a fair question after a front-loaded cost build. Bulls get to point at a funded order book that grew by more than a third in a year, which is the part I keep on the kitchen table when the daily tape gets noisy.
Bottom line: AeroVironment's record funded backlog is the story. The stock is trading the proof that demand is turning into funded work.
