Palantir's Army AI Deal Hits Fed Week
Last week the market got taxed by oil and yields, then bought the dip on Friday. The S&P 500 closed Friday at 7,656.98, down about 0.8% on the week. The Nasdaq finished at 26,333.04, down roughly 0.7%. The Dow took the hardest hit, ending at 52,573.29, down about 1.6%.
Brent and WTI spent the week near or above $100 as the Iran fight kept energy nerves raw, and the 10-year yield pushed toward 5%. Hotter inflation readings raised the odds that the Federal Reserve hikes this week, and that combo crushed rate-sensitive names until Friday's bounce. Under the indexes, defense and AI software kept telling a different story than the broad selloff.
This week is the real test. The Fed decides Wednesday after a two-day meeting, with markets pricing an about 87% chance of a quarter-point hike and watching the new dot plot harder than the statement. Retail sales land the same morning. Lennar reports after the close Wednesday as the only large U.S. earnings of note. Palantir (PLTR) is Stock of the Week because the Army just moved its TITAN AI targeting program into production, and that contract story has to live through a rate decision that can still punish high multiples.
Catalyst 1: The Fed on Wednesday
Wednesday's FOMC decision is the week's main event. A 25-basis-point hike is mostly priced, so the market will trade the path of policy, not only the headline move. The fresh economic projections and the chair's press conference decide whether this is one and done or the start of a higher path into year-end.
August retail sales hit the same morning. A soft consumer reading into a hike would force a harder debate about tightening into slowing demand. Oil still sitting near triple digits keeps the inflation side of that argument alive.
Catalyst 2: Defense AI Leaves the Prototype Lab
While indexes fretted about rates, the Army awarded about $192 million to move TITAN from prototypes into production. Palantir leads the software and overall production side at roughly $127 million. Anduril takes about $65 million on the rugged hardware and power stack. The order covers eight systems over about 18 months, split between advanced and basic variants.
TITAN is a mobile ground station that fuses sensor data into targeting intelligence. That is not a press-release science project. It is the kind of fielded AI work the free report of the week is built around, and it is why Palantir sits at the center of this Monday's story instead of a pure rate-trade name.
Stock of the Week: Palantir (PLTR)
Palantir closed Friday near $167 after a choppy stretch that still left the stock well off its recent local highs near the low $180s. The company already carries heavy government AI work, including Maven-related systems and a long Army software relationship. TITAN production is the fresh proof that those programs are leaving the demo stage and turning into delivered units.
Bull case: Production awards keep stacking, commercial and sovereign AI packages stay loud, and a one-and-done Fed message lets the multiple breathe. In that world, defense AI is still early and Palantir remains the public pure-play most investors can actually buy.
Bear case: The stock is still a high-expectation name. A hawkish dot plot, another leg higher in yields, or any hint that defense AI spend is concentrated in a few big awards can knock the premium even if the TITAN work is real. Valuation does the damage before the contracts do.
"The Fed sets the mood Wednesday. TITAN already told you the Army is buying AI that leaves the lab. Palantir is where those two stories collide this week."
Watch three things: the Fed's new dots and press conference, how software and defense open into the hike, and whether oil cools enough to give growth multiples any room.
Bottom Line
Last week oil and yields ran the table until Friday's bounce. This week the Fed decides if that pressure sticks. Palantir is Stock of the Week because the Army just paid real money to put AI targeting trucks into production, and that story has to clear a rate decision the whole market is already bracing for.
P.S. The free report of the week digs into the one stock behind the Pentagon's AI arsenal. Start there if you want the longer case beyond this week's rate fight.
