Akamai Just Got Paid Like a Real AI Cloud Company
Akamai spent years as the CDN and security name people forget until a website dies. Thursday night it looked like something else.
Anthropic locked in an $11.6 billion, seven-year cloud commitment on Akamai infrastructure, mostly to feed growing CPU workloads behind Claude. The companies left room to expand by another $9 billion, which would push the relationship toward roughly $20 billion of total commitment if both sides keep scaling.
This is not a one-rack press release. Akamai said the deal sits on top of more than $2.8 billion in multi-year cloud infrastructure commitments it already booked earlier this year. The story is that demand for distributed AI capacity is thick enough that a company once typed as "edge delivery" is now writing contracts in the same league as the big clouds.
The Warrant Is the Tell
Akamai also issued Anthropic a warrant on non-voting convertible preferred that converts into about 7.7 million common shares, or up to roughly 5% of the company on a fully vested basis. Exercise price: $111.33 a share.
About 2% is expected to vest with the $11.6 billion commitment. The other 3% vests if Anthropic expands the spend in roughly $3 billion chunks. That structure ties equity upside to more cloud dollars. It also tells you Anthropic wants skin in the metal, not just a rental invoice.
Shares jumped more than 20% in extended trading on the news. Late quotes had the stock ripping past the teens on percentage moves as the tape digested a contract that finally priced Akamai like an AI infrastructure name, not a sleepy internet utility.
Capex Comes First
Akamai estimates about $5.5 billion of total capital spending tied to the initial commitment. It is lifting 2026 capex by about $1.7 billion to lock memory and other long-lead parts. Management said the deal does not change this year's revenue guidance, which is the adult way of saying the big recognition ramps later as capacity comes online.
Akamai also pointed to hardware supply work with Lenovo and a large memory build authorization through its manufacturing partners. The boring supply-chain layer is where these AI cloud stories either hold or snap. If the racks slip, the $11.6 billion number stays on a slide deck longer than it should.
CPU-heavy AI inference and supporting workloads are the angle here. GPUs still own the training headlines. The operators still need a mountain of general-purpose compute around the edges, and Akamai is pitching a distributed footprint instead of one giant desert box.
Bottom line: Anthropic just wrote a multi-year check that forces Wall Street to re-rate Akamai as AI cloud capacity, not only as a CDN with a side hustle. Watch how fast that $5.5 billion of build shows up in the cash flow statement, and whether the warrant path toward 5% actually gets walked.
