IPO Market 2013: What's Next After the White-Hot Start

The IPO market has had a strong first half in 2013, in some cases delivering double-digit gains for those who have ventured into IPO investing.

As the stock market has staged an impressive rally, investor demand to get into the IPO market is returning to pre- credit-crisis levels. The second quarter was actually the most active three-month period for IPOs in six years.

So far in 2013, we have seen 92 deals. The average gain for initial buyers is around 20%.

The pace seems to be picking up, as the first quarter saw 31 deals raise about $7.6 billion, and the second quarter had 61 offerings raise more than $13 billion.

Financial firms, including real estate investment trusts (REITs), have been the most active industry, with 35 offerings. Healthcare companies are right behind, closing in on 34 deals so far this year.

Some analysts think we could see more than 200 deals by the end of the year.

That means more opportunity for IPO investing for double-digit gains…here's where to look.

Why the Best Investments in Tech Right Now Stem from This Industry

Money Morning Defense and Technology Specialist Michael A. Robinson has been saying how "Big Data" will deliver some of the best investments in technology that we've ever seen…

You see, by 2009, almost every midsized-to-large company in the U.S. economy was storing more than 200 terabytes of data. (A terabyte is about 1 trillion bytes, or 1,000 gigabytes, or 2 times the size of giant retailer Wal-Mart's data warehouse in 1999.)

The Fastest Road to Wealth in America (Right Under Your Nose)

From the Editor: Michael A. Robinson's research always gives our readers a chance to make a lot of money. Santarus, Inc. is up 125% in less than a year. LIN TV Corp. climbed 102% in just three months. And the company he's recommending later today is expected to grow even faster (and much bigger). So before the details hit your inbox, here's Michael's secret… and why he does all of this in the first place.

One disturbing statistic says it all…

It appeared on Page 1 of The Wall Street Journal back on March 19, less than 24 hours away from the first day of spring, the season of hope…

Fifty-seven percent (57%) of U.S. workers have less than $25,000 in savings.

It's a troubling fact.

And to me, it's just nuts…

After all, America isn't just the land of opportunity and democratic freedoms. It's the single-greatest wealth machine in the history of the human race.

So why are so many Americans struggling right now?

Well, there's no doubt the Great Recession of 2008 cut a swath through a lot of people's savings. Millions lost their jobs and had to rob from their savings just to make ends meet. I sincerely hope that didn't happen to you.

But here's the truth…

How to Collect Killer Profits from this New High-Tech TV

I invested countless hours and thousands of dollars putting together a state-of-the art home theater at our house here in Silicon Valley.

It's so good, in fact, that family members and friends tell my wife and me that it's actually better than going out to the movies.

Just last year, I upgraded the theater space with a new 60-inch plasma technology high-definition TV (HDTV). Watching Blu-ray DVDs on this monitor makes the movies we watch seem so realistic that you duck during explosions and want to reach out and touch the actors that are right there before you.

So, imagine my frustration when I recently learned that the largest and most expensive "appliance" in my home is about to become obsolete.

And the odds are pretty doggone good that you're facing the same dour realization …

But the news isn't all bad.

Every change, you see, brings new opportunities…

And today I'm going to tell you about a great one – small-cap firm that offers us a killer way to profit from the $3 billion shift to this new type of high-tech TV set …

Our Worry-Free Way of Investing in Biotech

If there's one sector that's primed for explosive growth right now, it's biotechnology.

Its position as a new market leader in the tech sector cannot be overstated. Clearly, investing in biotech is an idea few can afford to ignore.

Genentech, the first biotech company, was formed in 1973 and was the first to go public in 1980, which launched the biotech sector.

Though the sector is only 33 years old, humans have been using varying forms of biotech for thousands of years, before anyone was investing in anything.

Vivendi-Activision Blizzard Corporate Breakup Games Value for Investors

Last week, I wrote about how companies – and investors – can benefit from corporate breakups. I've never claimed to be clairvoyant, but in this case my timing was incidentally prophetic.

On Friday, a fantastic example of corporate breakup-for-value occurred when French conglomerate Vivendi SA (EPA:VIV) announced that it had sold its videogame giant Activision Blizzard (NASDAQ:ATVI) in an $8.17 billion deal.

Vivendi began as a simple water utility company back in the 1800s, but bloomed into one of the most diversified companies of all time. This multinational mass media and telecommunications company has owned everything from Chivas Regal whisky to African and Brazilian phone networks.

How to Spot the Best Stocks to Buy in Tech's Fastest-Growing Sector

This week saw San Jose, California networking giant Cisco Systems Inc. (Nasdaq:CSCO) purchase Columbia, Maryland-based cybersecurity company Sourcefire, Inc. (Nasdaq:FIRE).

The purchase price was a rather steep $2.7 billion. That's $76 per share – a handsome 29% premium to the around $49 share price early Monday, before the deal was announced. Shares of FIRE are now trading at just under $76 a share.

If you're looking for stocks to buy, these shares have probably had enough fun for one night, but they may have found a decent support level.

Sourcefire has spurned suitors before, and dallied with its fair share of M&A activity – turning down a buy offer from Barracuda Networks, while acquiring antivirus companies Immunet and Clam AntiVirus in the last decade

An Ever More Urgent Need

Attacks on computer networks are, without exaggeration, ceaseless. There is at least one ongoing attack somewhere in the world at any given time. Sourcefire is one of many network security firms filling an increasingly vital niche.

Sourcefire's flagship product, FirePOWER, which is based on the open-source Snort intrusion detection system, is acknowledged to be among the best in the industry.

Snort itself is said to be the most widely deployed IDP technology on earth. One of the more interesting products is their Advanced Malware Protection, which analyzes malware attacks and works to predict and prevent even the very worst attacks.

It's this kind of killer, boutique technology that makes companies like Sourcefire so attractive to the big boys.

After Saving My Life, This Technology Will Save Your Retirement

The technology I want to tell you about today is one of my best investment ideas.

And not just because it saved my life.

I'm talking about "location-based services," the technology that allows your smartphone to show where you are … or tell you where you need to go.

It's a technology that has double-your-money profit potential because of all it can do. It can help you find the nearest retail sale, guide you to the seafood house where you have reservations, or get you to a hotel for a good night's sleep.

It can also help you avoid costly navigation errors – and not just in a car.

Two summers ago, while sailing with my crew out on San Francisco Bay, an exceptionally heavy fog rolled in. We grabbed a smartphone, discovered we were off course, and traversed the dangerous Berkeley Reef – which would have ripped our keel right off had we not turned.

And the drama involving location-based-service technology doesn't end there.

You see, this market has finally reached critical mass and is poised to skyrocket.
