The meaning of that aphorism is clear. Being a pioneer - an innovator - is a big, big challenge.

By being first, you run the risk of being unable to capitalize on your invention. Maybe you're too early, and the demand just isn't there. Or the "supporting technology" won't allow your invention to function properly.
