Questcor Pharmaceuticals Inc. (Nasdaq: QCOR) shares surged some 30% in premarket trading Monday after announcing it has agreed to be acquired by Mallinckrodt PLC (NYSE: MNK) in a $5.6 billion cash and stock deal.
Shortly after the opening bell, shares of Anaheim-based Questcor climbed 25%, or $17, to $85.07, a 52-week high. Shares of Dublin-headquartered Mallinckrodt, which had been up 7.5% in early trading, slipped 2.29%, or $1.54, to $61.30 on extremely heavy volume. Less than 30 minutes into the session, 5.6 million MNK shares changed hands, five times the stock's average daily volume.

The news sent Plug Power stock up 4.5% in after-hours trading yesterday, though the stock was only up about 1.5% in mid-day trading today (Thursday).

Shares of the fuel cell system provider surged 49.03% to $8.48 Tuesday on extremely heavy volume of 137.02 million shares. Sending the stock soaring was a MarketWatch piece noting the company's chief executive officer disclosed he was set to announce a major deal in the next few weeks.
"We signed an additional order in North American with a global automaker," MarketWatch reported PLUG CEO Andy Marsh said in a telephone interview Tuesday.

Horizon Pharma Inc. (Nasdaq: HZNP) stock jumped more than 15% today (Wednesday) after it announced it will buy privately held Vidara Therapeutics International Ltd. in a cash and stock deal valued at $660 million.
The Deerfield, Ill.-based specialty pharmaceutical firm said the resulting company, Horizon Pharma PLC, will be 26% owned by shareholders of Vidara, which has operations in Dublin and the United States. Vidara shareholders will also share some $200 million in cash.
