J.C. Penney Company Inc.’s (NYSE: JCP) 36-year-old tale will likely continue in tragedy today (Wednesday), as it is projected to report a $0.81 per share loss in its Q4 2013 earnings after the bell.
That would notch a $239.15 million net loss, compared with a loss of $427 million, or $2.51 cents per share, in the same quarter last year, according to a survey of analysts by Thomson Reuters.

Best Investments for the week ending Feb. 21, 2014: U.S. stocks slipped last week as markets reacted to a string of disappointing data from housing to manufacturing.
For the week, the Dow Jones Industrial Average dipped 0.3% to close at 16,103.30. The S&P 500 Index lost 0.1% to end at 1,836.25. The Nasdaq tacked on 0.5% to end at 4,263.41.

On Monday, FireEye Inc. (Nasdaq: FEYE) stock soared more than 7% on news that cybersecurity competitor Palo Alto Networks Inc. (NYSE: PANW) hit record-breaking Q2 2014 earnings numbers earlier this morning.
"Enterprises around the world are accelerating their investments in security to enable them to improve their business and protect them against the risks stemming from cyber attacks," Palo Alto Networks president and Chief Executive Officer Mark McLaughlin said at earnings release today.

Best stocks to buy for the week ending Feb. 14, 2014: All three major benchmarks neared record highs last week, posting their biggest weekly gains of 2014.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average climbed 2.3% to end the week at 16,154.39. The S&P 500 Index tacked on 2.3% to 1,838.63 - within spitting distance of its 1,848.38 record close. The Nasdaq rose 2.9% to 4,244.03, its highest level in 13.5 years.
But the best gains came from precious metals. Concerns about a flagging U.S. economy ignited renewed interest in gold and silver as reluctantly bullish investors hedged their bets.

Best stocks to buy for the week ending Feb. 7, 2010: A robust two-day rally late last week helped the Dow Jones Industrial Average and the S&P 500 Index post their best week of the year, with gains of 0.6% and 0.8% respectively.
Despite the solid showing, the 30-stock index remains down 4.72% year to date. The S&P 500 is off 2.78% since the start of the year. And the Nasdaq, which rose 0.54% last week, is lower by 1.21% so far in 2014.
Indeed, this year has been marked by volatility, with the Dow swinging up or down at least 100 points in intraday trading on 25 out of 26 days since the start of the year.
While gains were modest across the three major benchmarks today (Tuesday), there was nothing modest about these major gains for Furiex Pharmaceuticals (Nasdaq: FURX) stock.
Shares of Furiex more than doubled in value, surging some 150% intraday. The closed up 129.91% at $105.69. The reason: The company announced that its experimental drug eluxadoline significantly alleviated diarrhea and abdominal pain, which typically accompany irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), in two large late-stage trials.

This morning (Tuesday), Michael Kors Holdings Ltd (NYSE: KORS) announced a 59% increase in revenue for its fiscal 2014 Q3 report ending Dec. 28, 2013, compared to Q3 2013, marking the 31st consecutive quarter of growth for the global luxury brand.
Kors' quarterly earnings per share (EPS) climbed 73.4% to $1.11 per share, shattering the consensus estimates of $0.86. Wholesale net sales increased 68.2% to $461.4 million and licensing revenue increased 59.0% to $47.4 million.

Goldman Sachs analyst Heath Terry told investors that "if Pandora doubles advertising, increases its mix of local commercials to half of all ads and leverages fixed-content costs," the stock could go as high as $60.
