An Echo From 30 Years Ago Is Still "Making a Difference" Today

All of us, I'm sure, have been through some sort of "graduation" or another - either our own or that of a friend or family member. I've been through several.

I already have a subscription to your well informed "Money Morning". I appreciate the time you take to make sure I am on the right page of things happening. I was glad to read of a good teacher who gave you and your family a challenge to not only improve your life but, as Ralph Waldo Emerson expressed it "…
to leave the world a bit better…a redeemed social condition."
    Thank you your insights. Mildred

      Dear Mildred:

Thank you so much for the kind, reflective – and exceptionally erudite – comment.

      And I mean that …

Feedback is always welcomed … and comments like this make my day.

Since you were kind enough to take the time to post this, let me repay you by giving you the proverbial "rest of the story."

I sent this column to my sister, Carol Ann, the youngest of the three Patalon children and the sibling I referenced in this column.

She dropped me this note … and shared a tale I was unaware of until now.

      "Billy, very nice …

I don’t know if I ever told you – I saw Dr. Murphy at PHL airport a few years back. We were both racing to catch flights, but did chat for a few minutes. I told him I still recalled the graduation speech referenced [in your column]. He was thankful for the compliment.

      Love, Carol Ann."

My sister lives in California now. She and I were inseparable growing up. I used to take her to movies, drive her all over the place, and felt pretty cool as the "looked-up-to big brother."

      And I miss her.

She's got two great kids – both girls – and is a model Mom (just like ours' growing up).

Hearing from my sister Carol Ann is always a treat.

And hearing this story was a gift.

A gift from you, Mildred — since I never would've heard Carol Ann's tale had it not been for this column, and your comment which prompted me to send it to my sister to read.

Looks to me, Mildred, as if you "made a difference."

And I thank you for that.

      With respect AND gratitude,
