At one time or another, I'm sure we've all heard some variation on that quote, which the dictator of the Roman Republic allegedly made to explain why he divorced his second wife, Pompeia.
The story, as near as I recall it, was that Pompeia was hosting a festival to honor a special goddess associated with chastity in women - as well as the general protection of the Roman people. And it was an event no men were permitted to attend. A politician named Clodius, intent on seducing Pompeia, dressed up as a woman and witnessed the secret proceedings, which actually had to be repeated after he was caught.
