How revved up is the demand for sand - a crucial "key ingredient" commodity that's already in short supply?
In India, a "Sand Mafia" muscles local folks to the sidelines so it can swipe as much of this material as possible. In that country - as well as in Morocco and throughout the Caribbean - so much sand is being illegally mined that beaches and riverbeds are being stripped bare.
It's almost as if the old maxim "Cry me a river" had been replaced by the mantra "Steal me one, instead."
