"The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step." -- Lao-tzu
As I've mentioned before, my Dad "collects" quotations.
You know exactly what I'm talking about: bits of wisdom or witticisms - the more powerful the better - offered by historical figures that remain as relevant as the day the statements were made.
During his years at Pratt & Whitney, Westinghouse and Northrop Grumman Corp. (NYSE: NOC), my Dad would collect them himself, gather the quotations that others would send him and have me hunt important ones down.
As a manager, Dad put those quotations to good use - as lessons for young engineers, to make (or score) a point in a meeting or to help identify a particular customer's needs.
Through the years, I grew to understand how effective those bits of wisdom could be.
And when I became a financial columnist, I started a collection of my own: I collect the financial maxims and aphorisms that can help my readers - each of you folks - become better investors.
We're going to talk about one of them right now - the Lao-tzu quotation that heads this column -because it will folks launch their wealth program -despite the current market uncertainty.
