Dow Jones Today Slumps as Italian Political Instability Rocks Markets

By , Executive Producer, Money Morning

The Dow Jones today fell over 150 points in pre-market trading as a political crisis in Italy threatened the economic stability of the Eurozone. Hours before a populist coalition was expected to take control of the Italian parliament, Italian President Sergio Mattarella refused to appoint a euro-skeptic economist to an important government post, forcing a breakdown of the coalition.

Over the weekend, Italy’s prime minister appointed a former International Monetary Fund official as interim prime minister in an effort to form a new government and restore order to Europe’s third-largest economy.

Here are the numbers from Monday for the Dow, S&P 500, and Nasdaq:

Index Previous Close Point Change Percentage Change
Dow Jones 24753.09 -58.67 -0.24%
S&P 500 2721.33 -6.43 -0.24%
Nasdaq 7433.85 9.42 0.13%
