Just look at what happened to stocks after the first presidential debate of the 2012 election cycle between Mitt Romney and President Barack Obama. The VIX volatility index, a measure of fear and uncertainty in the markets, surged nearly 30% from Oct. 3 -- the day of the debate -- up until Election Day on Nov. 6. Over the same time period, the S&P 500 fell 0.79%.
