[CHART] Instagram vs. Twitter by the Numbers

By , Money Morning

In the Instagram vs. Twitter war, Instagram is winning. Especially when it comes to monthly active user (MAU) growth...

Facebook Inc. (Nasdaq: FB) - which acquired Instagram on April 9, 2012 - reported that Instagram hit 400 million MAUs on Sept. 22, 2015. That was a 100 million user increase from the 300 million announced in December 2014, reported Business Insider.

Twitter Inc. (NYSE: TWTR), on the other hand, reported just 316 million monthly active users at the end of Q2 on July 28, 2015. Since then, the social networking site has laid off 8% of its workforce and nixed plans to extend its headquarters in San Francisco, reported CBS Money Watch on Oct. 12.

And it doesn't look like Twitter's trouble is going to end anytime soon...

To make matters worse in the Instagram vs. Twitter battle for social superiority, Instagram will surpass Twitter in popularity for marketers by 2017, reported eMarketer on Oct 22. While only 325 U.S. corporations with 100 employees or more will use Instagram for marketing this year, that number is expected to jump to 49% next year and up to 71% in two years.

Twitter would be edged out in this area for the first time, as its market penetration for actual marketing is expected to grow only to 67% total by 2017.
