Silver Prices Today Could Slip on Jobs Numbers

Precious Metals News: Silver prices today could slip if the December jobs report comes in higher than expected.

Silver prices traded in tight range Thursday ending the day a touch higher, up $0.076, or 0.31%, at $19.61 an ounce. But the price of silver fell Wednesday after strong ADP data. The ADP report showed 238,000 jobs were added in December, above the 200,000 expected. The U.S. dollar index edged higher following the ADP report, and metals were clipped.

Why Intercept Pharma (Nasdaq: ICPT) Stock Gained 280% Today

Yes, you're reading this correctly – Intercept Pharmaceuticals Inc. (Nasdaq: ICPT) stock more than tripled today (Thursday).

ICPT shares surged 300% in trading today after an analysis by an independent safety committee showed its liver disease drug met the main goal of a mid-stage trial. ICPT stock closed at $275.49, up 280.56% from Wednesday's closing price of $72.39. The stock climbed as high as $305 in intraday trading.

U.S. Stock Market News Today: Check Out the Pharma Stock That Soared 300%

Stock Market News Today, Jan. 9, 2014: U.S. stocks are fairly flat today, with all three indexes down just a smidge, weighed after today's jobless claims report that was on par with analyst expectations.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average today is down slightly at 16,456, while the Nasdaq Composite Index is off 0.12% at 4,160. The Standard & Poor's 500 is down less than a point at 1,837.

Alcoa (NYSE: AA) Stock Falls in After-Hours on Q4 Earnings Loss

Alcoa Inc. (NYSE: AA) stock rose 2.9% yesterday (Wednesday) ahead of today's fourth-quarter earnings report due after the bell.

Analysts are projecting earnings of $0.06 per share, down from $0.11 last quarter. At $5.54 billion, revenue estimates for AA are in line with the consensus estimate.

Alcoa used to be an earnings bellwether, although is no longer considered as one. Still, its earnings report is considered the official start to earnings season and is monitored for clues to global economic health.
