Tech Stocks to Buy in 2014: This One's a Doozy

After perusing all the displays at the massive Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas earlier this month, tech-sector pundits began touting ultra-high-definition television (UHDTV) as one of the next big "breakout" technologies for 2014.

This wasn't a surprise to you.

Back in August, we said that specialty microchip maker Ambarella Inc. (Nasdaq: AMBA) would be a major beneficiary of the UHDTV surge and predicted the stock could double in just over two years.

  • The Global Sell-Off Continues: Global markets fell again on Monday. Turmoil continues to spread through Argentina, India, Brazil, and Turkey amid a selloff in developing-market currencies. This complements a growing concern over a Chinese credit crunch. The Chicago Board Options Exchange Emerging Markets ETF Volatility Index spiked 40% last week, the single largest weekly increase since September 2011, according to Bloomberg. The Volatility S&P 500(VIX) is now up more than 47% in the past 30 days amid concerns of global turmoil ripping across emerging markets.

Hot Penny Stocks This Week

A number of this year's hot penny stocks have soared by double digits since the New Year.

Their meteoric moves have far outpaced the lukewarm (if any) gains of major benchmarks and their components. The Dow is down roughly 4% and the S&P is off nearly 3% year to date, after gains of 26% and 32% respectively in 2013. The Nasdaq was up 1% until Friday's broad-based selloff left the tech-heavy index down an equal amount for the year.

Stock Market Today, Jan. 22: U.S. stocks today are mixed and trading in a fairly narrow range as corporate earnings season continues – with lackluster results. Investors are cautious ahead of economic data tomorrow that includes jobless claims and existing home sales reports.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average today is down 0.24% at 16,374. The Standard & Poor's 500 is up 0.2% at 1,841, and the Nasdaq Composite Index is up 0.46% at 4,245.
