Money Morning's best stocks to buy last week hinged on several key third-quarter earnings reports that had a big impact on markets.

Lifted by a barrage of encouraging data, the Dow and S&P 500 Index logged their third consecutive week of gains. The Dow jumped 1.11%, the S&P climbed 0.88%, and the Nasdaq added 0.74% for the week. All key sectors of the S&P ended in positive territory, boosted by telecoms and utilities.

In the middle of earnings season, Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) is claiming center stage as it readies to release its fourth-quarter results after the closing bell today (Monday).

Apple stock is up 0.5% at $528.34 today, having risen nearly 25% since its last earnings report, and today's results will include the initial impact of the company's latest iPhone and iPad release. AAPL is trading in a 52-week range of $3.85 to $614.00 and at about 13 times forward earnings.

Last week's best stocks to buy started out D.C. driven. But when the drama on Capitol Hill subsided – for now, at least – focus turned to third-quarter earnings.

Google Inc.'s (Nasdaq: GOOG) better-than-expected quarterly results and upbeat outlook helped markets move sharply higher.

The S&P 500 Index and the Nasdaq logged their best weekly gains in three months, up 2.42% and 3.23% respectively. It was the Nasdaq's best close since September 2000.

It's been an excellent year for the initial public offerings (IPO) market, with the number of companies going public more than 47% ahead of last year's pace.

The surge in IPO activity has already assured that 2013 will be the best year for new issues since 2007, just before the financial crisis pummeled the markets. That year had 213 IPOs; so far in 2013 there have been 168 IPOs, according to Renaissance Capital.
