FOMC Meeting Minutes Show 2013 Taper - Not Anymore

The Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting minutes out today (Wednesday) confirmed that the Sept. 17-18 meeting involved more debate than before on whether or not to continue quantitative easing (QE).

All FOMC meeting attendees were in agreement in the decision to pause for a while longer, at least until data confirms a more substantial and sustainable recovery.

Despite the delay, most U.S. Federal Reserve policymakers were of the opinion last month that the Fed will likely begin a taper this year and finish up by mid-2014, according to the minutes.

Yet, that was before the current U.S. government shutdown and looming debt ceiling deadline.

Who Is Janet Yellen, and What Will She Be Like as the Next Fed Chair?

U.S. President Barack Obama officially nominated Janet Yellen as the next Federal Reserve Chairman today (Wednesday).

Dow and S&P 500 futures immediately jumped late Tuesday on news the nomination was coming. A vote for Yellen suggests continuity, not change.

As Chief Investment Strategist Keith Fitz-Gerald has said, "Yellen has never met a printing press she didn't like."

How to Prepare for the Debt Ceiling Deadline: Oct. 17

Investors have started to hunt for how to prepare for the debt ceiling deadline since U.S. Treasury Secretary Jack Lew put a date on the day the country will hit its borrowing limit.

"If we have insufficient cash on hand, it would be impossible for the United States of America to meet all of its obligations for the first time in history," Lew wrote in a letter to Congress sent Sept. 25, when he noted that Oct. 17 is the day we hit the debt ceiling.
